Mindfulness Creativity Flow
Mindfulness and Creativity The experience of being creative in a state of observation and relaxed awareness, flow; playful without judgment, engaged in the process as it unfolds.
Mindfulness is simply being aware of what is happening right now without wishing it were different; enjoying the pleasant without holding on when it changes (which it will); being with the unpleasant without fearing it will always be this way (which it won’t).” James Baraz
“Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart. Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens.” Carl Jung
The musician who puts notes and words together in his own way writes music authentic and relevant to him. Children make up songs relevant to them. Creativity can be sophisticated or unrefined, serious or playful. But it is always personal, relying on the choices of the individual.
Just as musical notes can be combined in almost endless combinations, so can the neural connections in a brain. We usually live in familiarity and habit. But we can become more conscious of our choices through mindfulness, and live a more creative and authentic life.
Creativity in art or life is a process of curiosity, awareness and practice. It is perhaps the greatest gift we can give ourselves and those who love us.
All art is not up for sale
Sometimes when things are broken the greatest creativity emanates from their fragments. Creativity is a process of the soul. It does not need an outcome or a product for the world to accept. It needs only the truth of its own expression. It comes from within and makes of your world whatever you wish it to make. Don’t be afraid of your own creativity. Honour it. All creativity is not for everyone to like or understand. All art is not up for sale. Some creativity has a bigger role to play. It is to keep you company when you are alone, when you need a friend, when the world doesn’t seem to understand you. Your creativity, no matter what that might be, will keep you inspired and satisfied. It is your secret place. It is yours to feel free and happy.
Activity in flow is combination of being and doing … doing an activity with complete engagement and focus, heightened awareness, losing sense of everyday reality (eg time), with increased clarity and calm. It is in this state that optimum happiness is likely to be experienced.
Eating a quick meal will produce a short lived state of happiness, receding with the sugar high. Cooking a meal mindfully is more likely to result in the enjoyable state of relaxed awareness or “flow”. These factors will bring a pleasant feeling of a different type, relying on an inner satisfaction rather than external factors, and lasting beyond the experience of just eating.
Making a piece of art authentic to your self will bring more resilient pleasant feelings than simply looking at other people’s art. Writing a poem will bring more satisfaction than reciting a poem written by some else. It doesn’t need to be worthy of publication. Satisfaction will come from the heightened sense of awareness and being..
“A joyful life is an individual creation that cannot be copied from a recipe.
Control of consciousness determines the quality of life.
To overcome the anxieties and depressions of contemporary life … a person has to learn to provide rewards to herself. She has to develop the ability to find enjoyment and purpose regardless of external circumstances.” Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience
